Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 0.25 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Step 2

Once the butter is fully melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture is lightly golden and forms a smooth paste.

Step 3

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Cook for 4-5 minutes, or until the mixture thickens slightly.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to low and add the shredded cheddar cheese and cream cheese. Stir until both cheeses are completely melted and the sauce is smooth.

Step 5

Stir in the Dijon mustard, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Step 6

Continue to cook on low for another 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, to meld the flavors.

Step 7

Remove from heat and serve immediately over your favorite dishes, such as vegetables, pasta, baked potatoes, or nachos.
