Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, use a hand mixer or stand mixer with a paddle attachment to beat the softened unsalted butter on medium speed for 2-3 minutes or until it is light and fluffy.

Step 2

Gradually add the powdered sugar, about 1 cup at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition to prevent the sugar from flying out of the bowl. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure everything is incorporated.

Step 3

Once all the powdered sugar is added, pour in the heavy cream (or whole milk), vanilla extract, and the optional pinch of salt.

Step 4

Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 3-4 minutes. This will result in a light, fluffy, and smooth buttercream with a creamy consistency.

Step 5

Taste the frosting and adjust as needed, adding a small amount of additional heavy cream if the buttercream is too thick, or more powdered sugar if it’s too thin.

Step 6

Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies, or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. If refrigerating, allow it to come to room temperature and re-whip before using.
