Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
  • 12 sheets lasagna noodles (uncooked or pre-cooked)
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1.5 cups grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute.

Step 3

Add the ground beef and ground Italian sausage to the pan. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess grease if necessary.

Step 4

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20-25 minutes. Stir in the fresh basil at the end.

Step 5

While the sauce simmers, prepare the ricotta mixture. In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese. Mix until smooth and set aside.

Step 6

If using uncooked lasagna noodles, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 7

To assemble the lasagna, spread about 1/2 cup of the meat sauce evenly on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 8

Place 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping. Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, then sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella on top. Add a layer of meat sauce, spreading it evenly over the mozzarella.

Step 9

Repeat the layers two more times, starting with the noodles, until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of meat sauce on top.

Step 10

Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella and 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese evenly over the top layer.

Step 11

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, ensuring it does not touch the cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Step 12

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese on top is bubbly and golden.

Step 13

Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your Wonderful Lasagna!
