Ingredients

  • 500 grams minced beef
  • 1 medium, finely chopped yellow onion
  • 2 medium, diced carrots
  • 2 chopped celery stalks
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 500 ml beef stock
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 800 grams, peeled and chopped potatoes
  • 100 ml whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon (to taste) salt
  • 1 teaspoon (to taste) black pepper
  • 50 grams, grated (optional) cheddar cheese

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Step 2

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and melt. Brown the minced beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, for 5-7 minutes. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.

Step 3

In the same skillet, melt another tablespoon of butter. Sauté the onion, carrots, celery, and garlic for 5-6 minutes until softened.

Step 4

Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir well for 1 minute to incorporate.

Step 5

Add the browned beef back to the skillet along with beef stock, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

Step 6

Simmer the mixture over low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened. Remove the bay leaf and set the mince aside.

Step 7

While the mince is cooking, prepare the mashed potatoes. Boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water for 15-20 minutes until soft.

Step 8

Drain the potatoes and mash them with 1 tablespoon of butter and milk until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 9

In a greased casserole dish, evenly spread the cooked mince as a base layer.

Step 10

Spread the mashed potatoes over the mince, using a spoon or spatula to make an even layer. For a golden finish, sprinkle grated cheddar cheese on top if desired.

Step 11

Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbling.

Step 12

Allow to cool slightly before serving. Divide into portions and enjoy your Winter Warmer Mince and Tatties Casserole!
