Ingredients

  • 6 large ripe pears
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Wash, peel, core, and chop the pears into 1-inch chunks.

Step 2

Place the chopped pears in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven.

Step 3

Add the brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, vanilla extract, and water to the pot.

Step 4

Stir everything together to evenly coat the pears with the spices and sugar.

Step 5

Set the pot over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

Lower the heat to medium-low, cover the pot, and let the pears cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they soften and start to break down.

Step 7

Remove the pot from heat and use an immersion blender to blend the mixture until smooth. Alternatively, you can carefully transfer the mixture to a countertop blender, working in batches if necessary, and blend until smooth.

Step 8

Return the blended pear mixture to the pot. Continue to cook on low heat, uncovered, for an additional 90 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent sticking or burning. The mixture should thicken and darken into a rich, smooth butter-like consistency.

Step 9

Once the pear butter has reached the desired consistency, remove it from heat and let it cool slightly.

Step 10

Transfer the pear butter to clean, sterilized jars. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or process in a water bath canner for longer storage.
