Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Warm milk (100-110°F)
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Butter, softened (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.

Step 2

In a separate bowl, combine warm milk, melted butter, and the egg. Whisk until smooth. Ensure the milk is not too hot, as it could kill the yeast.

Step 3

Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredient mixture. Mix with a wooden spoon or a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook until the dough comes together.

Step 4

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes (or 5 minutes in a stand mixer on medium speed) until smooth and elastic. The dough should be slightly tacky but not sticky.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Punch down the dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle roughly 12x8 inches.

Step 7

Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Fold each piece in half lengthwise, gently pressing the edges to seal.

Step 8

Place the folded rolls seam-side down on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, about 1-2 inches apart. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for about 30-40 minutes, or until puffed.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 10

Brush the tops of the rolls with the softened butter.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and immediately brush with more butter for extra sheen and flavor.

Step 13

Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy these delicious rolls warm with butter or as part of your meal!
