Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 0.5 teaspoons Baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 cups Unsalted butter, softened
  • 0.3 cups Coconut sugar or brown sugar
  • 0.25 cups Unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoons Pure vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cups Dark chocolate chips
  • 1.5 tablespoons Milk (dairy or plant-based)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and coconut sugar until well combined and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Add the unsweetened applesauce and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture, and mix until smooth.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the cookies tender.

Step 6

Gently fold in the dark chocolate chips using a spatula.

Step 7

If the dough feels a bit dry, add the milk one tablespoon at a time until the dough holds together nicely.

Step 8

Using a tablespoon or cookie scoop, drop rounded spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Step 9

Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 9-11 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. The centers may still appear soft, which is fine.

Step 10

Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 11

Serve and enjoy! Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
