Ingredients

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons water (if needed)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds or oats (optional, for topping)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm milk (around 110°F/43°C). Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, and salt.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, whisk together the honey, melted butter, and egg. Stir this mixture into the yeast and milk.

Step 4

Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms. If the dough feels too dry, add water 1 tablespoon at a time as needed.

Step 5

Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 7

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place on a lined baking sheet, spaced slightly apart.

Step 8

Cover the rolls with a towel and allow them to rise again for 30 minutes, or until puffy.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). If desired, brush the tops of the rolls with milk or an egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds or oats.

Step 10

Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
