Ingredients

  • 300 grams Whole wheat flour
  • 100 grams All-purpose flour
  • 50 grams Rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 360 milliliters Buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon Honey

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, rolled oats, baking soda, and salt. Mix well to combine.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and honey until the honey is fully dissolved.

Step 4

Slowly pour the buttermilk mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon or spatula until a shaggy dough forms. Avoid over-mixing to keep the bread tender.

Step 5

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and gently knead it just a few times to help it come together into a round loaf. The dough will be slightly sticky and rustic in appearance.

Step 6

Place the loaf onto the prepared baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to score a deep cross into the top of the loaf. This allows the bread to expand while baking.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 8

Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your Whole Grain Irish Soda Bread with butter, jam, or alongside your favorite soup!
