Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef (preferably grass-fed)
  • 28 ounces canned whole tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 0.25 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 5

While the beef is cooking, crush the canned whole tomatoes in a bowl using your hands or a potato masher.

Step 6

Once the beef is browned, stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, sea salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using).

Step 7

Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook uncovered over low heat for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.

Step 8

Remove the sauce from the heat and stir in the fresh basil leaves.

Step 9

Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary before serving.

Step 10

Serve hot over zoodles, spaghetti squash, or your choice of vegetables. Enjoy!
