Ingredients

  • 3 pounds beef back ribs
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 cup coconut aminos
  • 0.25 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).

Step 2

In a small bowl, mix together the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.

Step 3

Pat the beef ribs dry with paper towels. Rub the spice mixture evenly over the ribs.

Step 4

Arrange the ribs in a single layer in a large roasting pan, bone side down.

Step 5

Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 2.5 hours, or until the ribs are tender.

Step 6

While the ribs are baking, prepare the Whole30 barbecue sauce by combining the coconut aminos, balsamic vinegar, unsweetened applesauce, tomato paste, chili powder, and cayenne pepper in a saucepan.

Step 7

Cook the sauce over medium heat, stirring frequently, until it begins to bubble. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 8

After the ribs have cooked for 2.5 hours, remove them from the oven and increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C).

Step 9

Brush a generous amount of the prepared barbecue sauce over the ribs.

Step 10

Return the ribs to the oven, uncovered, and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until the sauce caramelizes and slightly thickens.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let the ribs rest for a few minutes before serving.

Step 12

Serve the ribs with any remaining barbecue sauce on the side.
