Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)
  • 3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Directions

Step 1

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or using a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer, beat the softened unsalted butter on medium speed until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 2

Gradually add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, to the butter while mixing on low speed to prevent a sugar cloud. After each addition, increase the speed to medium until the sugar is fully incorporated.

Step 3

After adding all the powdered sugar, pour in the heavy whipping cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat on low speed until combined, then increase to medium-high speed and beat for 3-5 minutes until the icing is light, fluffy, and fully whipped.

Step 4

Taste and adjust the consistency if necessary. If the icing is too thick, add an additional 1 teaspoon of heavy whipping cream at a time until desired consistency is reached. If it’s too soft, add more powdered sugar, 1-2 tablespoons at a time.

Step 5

Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or other desserts, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Allow to come back to room temperature and re-whip before using again.
