Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large carrot, diced
  • 1 medium celery stalk, diced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 240 ml beef broth
  • 400 grams tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 4 medium russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 120 ml heavy cream
  • 200 grams cheddar cheese, grated
  • 50 grams parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.

Step 4

Add the diced onion, garlic, carrot, and celery to the skillet. Cook for 5–7 minutes until the vegetables soften.

Step 5

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1–2 minutes until well incorporated.

Step 6

Add the beef broth, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, dried oregano, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 7

While the beef mixture is simmering, prepare the potatoes. Peel and slice them thinly using a knife or mandoline.

Step 8

In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over low heat until warm, but not boiling.

Step 9

Spread the beef and vegetable mixture evenly into a 9x13-inch (23x33 cm) casserole dish.

Step 10

Layer the sliced potatoes over the beef mixture, overlapping slightly.

Step 11

Pour the warm heavy cream evenly over the potatoes.

Step 12

Sprinkle the grated cheddar and parmesan cheeses over the top.

Step 13

Cover the casserole dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.

Step 14

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.

Step 15

Allow the casserole to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy your Western Beef Casserole Au Gratin!
