Ingredients

  • 750 ml dry red wine
  • 1 whole orange
  • 2 sticks cinnamon stick
  • 5 pieces whole cloves
  • 2 pieces star anise
  • 3 pieces cardamom pods
  • 2 tbsp honey or sugar
  • 60 ml brandy
  • 125 ml water
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary sprig (optional)
  • 4 slices additional orange slices for garnish (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Slice the orange into thin rounds. Set aside a few slices for garnish, if desired.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, combine the water, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and cardamom pods.

Step 3

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes to infuse the spices.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to low, then add the red wine, orange slices, and honey or sugar to the saucepan. Stir gently to combine.

Step 5

Warm the mixture over low heat for about 10 minutes. Do not let it boil, as boiling can burn off the alcohol and alter the flavor.

Step 6

After 10 minutes, stir in the brandy and allow the mulled wine to heat for another 2 minutes.

Step 7

Taste and adjust the sweetness, adding more honey or sugar if desired.

Step 8

Strain the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses to remove the spices.

Step 9

Garnish with a reserved orange slice and a sprig of fresh rosemary, if using, before serving warm.
