Ingredients

  • 1 cup Water
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar (for dough)
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups Whole milk (for hot chocolate)
  • 4 ounces Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar (for hot chocolate)
  • 1 teaspoon Cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons Water (to mix with cornstarch)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, butter, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat.

Step 2

Reduce the heat to low and add the flour all at once. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a smooth ball, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly for 5 minutes.

Step 3

Add eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition until the dough is smooth and shiny.

Step 4

Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.

Step 5

Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Carefully pipe 4-5 inch strips of dough directly into the hot oil, using scissors or a knife to cut each strip. Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Work in small batches to avoid overcrowding the pot.

Step 6

Remove churros with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Step 7

Combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon in a shallow dish. Roll warm churros in the mixture to coat evenly.

Step 8

For the hot chocolate, heat 2 cups of milk in a saucepan over medium heat until steaming, but not boiling.

Step 9

In a small bowl, mix 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry.

Step 10

Stir the slurry into the hot milk, followed by the semi-sweet chocolate chips and 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar. Whisk until the chocolate has melted and the mixture has thickened, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 11

Serve the warm churros alongside the hot chocolate for dipping or drinking. Enjoy immediately!
