Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples (preferably Golden Delicious or Granny Smith)
  • 120 grams unsalted butter
  • 200 grams granulated sugar
  • 150 grams all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 3 large eggs
  • 60 milliliters whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for garnish, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease a 23cm (9-inch) round cake pan and set aside.

Step 2

Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick wedges. Toss them with the lemon juice to prevent browning.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 50 grams of butter and add 100 grams of granulated sugar. Stir until the sugar starts to caramelize, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 4

Pour the caramelized mixture into the prepared cake pan and spread it evenly. Arrange the apple slices over the caramel in overlapping circles.

Step 5

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and ground cinnamon. Set aside.

Step 6

In a large mixing bowl, beat the remaining 70 grams of butter with 100 grams of granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 7

Add the eggs to the butter mixture one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 8

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined; do not overmix.

Step 9

Pour the batter evenly over the arranged apples in the pan. Smooth the top with a spatula.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Step 11

Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Carefully run a knife around the edges of the pan and invert the cake onto a serving plate. Tap the bottom of the pan to release the apples and caramel.

Step 12

Allow the cake to cool completely before sprinkling with powdered sugar, if desired, and serve. Enjoy this Wallis-inspired treat!
