Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium, finely chopped white onion
  • 3 cloves, minced garlic
  • 2 medium, finely chopped fresh jalapeños
  • 2 small, finely chopped habanero peppers
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 14-ounce can canned diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon or to taste salt
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons, finely chopped (optional for garnish) fresh cilantro

Directions

Step 1

Heat a medium-sized skillet or saucepan over medium heat. Add the olive oil and let it warm up for about 30 seconds.

Step 2

Add the finely chopped onion to the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes soft and translucent.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic, jalapeños, and habanero peppers to the skillet. Sauté for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the peppers to soften and the garlic to become fragrant.

Step 4

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute to caramelize it slightly, enhancing its sweetness.

Step 5

Add the canned diced tomatoes (including their juices), apple cider vinegar, honey, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and water to the skillet. Stir to combine all the ingredients.

Step 6

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Lower the heat to medium-low and let it cook for about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce slightly thickens and the flavors meld together.

Step 7

Remove the skillet from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly, about 5 minutes.

Step 8

Transfer the mixture to a blender or use an immersion blender to blend the sauce until smooth. Be careful blending hot liquids; work in batches if necessary.

Step 9

Stir in the lime juice and adjust seasoning with additional salt, if needed.

Step 10

Serve immediately as a sauce or dip, or allow it to cool completely before storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Garnish with fresh cilantro, if desired.
