Ingredients

  • 100 grams Butter
  • 50 grams Coconut oil
  • 3 medium Onions
  • 1 medium Apple
  • 0.25 teaspoons Ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoons Ground caraway seeds (optional)
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Peel and finely dice the onions.

Step 2

Peel, core, and finely dice the apple.

Step 3

In a medium skillet, melt the butter and coconut oil over medium-low heat.

Step 4

Add the diced onions and cook slowly, stirring frequently, until they caramelize and turn golden brown. This should take around 20-25 minutes; be patient to avoid burning.

Step 5

Once the onions are caramelized, add the diced apple, ground nutmeg, ground caraway seeds (if using), salt, and black pepper.

Step 6

Cook the mixture for another 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apple softens and blends with the onions.

Step 7

Remove the skillet from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.

Step 8

Transfer the mixture to a food processor and pulse briefly until it reaches the desired spreadable consistency. Alternatively, leave it chunky for a more rustic texture.

Step 9

Scoop the Zwiebelschmalz into a serving dish or jar. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.

Step 10

Let it cool completely before serving. It can be stored refrigerated in an airtight container for up to one week.
