Ingredients

  • 400 grams firm tofu
  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 4 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 200 milliliters coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili flakes
  • 8 skewers

Directions

Step 1

Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for 15 minutes.

Step 2

Cut the tofu into 2.5 cm (1 inch) cubes.

Step 3

In a mixing bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, turmeric powder, coriander powder, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Add the tofu cubes to the mixture and gently toss to coat. Let them marinate for at least 15 minutes.

Step 4

Meanwhile, soak wooden skewers in water to prevent them from burning during grilling.

Step 5

For the peanut sauce, in a small saucepan over medium heat, combine peanut butter, coconut milk, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, lime juice, brown sugar, and chili flakes. Stir well and cook until the sauce is smooth and slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Adjust the flavor with additional soy sauce or lime juice according to taste.

Step 6

Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat and brush with vegetable oil.

Step 7

Thread the marinated tofu cubes onto the skewers, about 4-5 pieces per skewer.

Step 8

Grill the tofu skewers for 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and slightly charred.

Step 9

Serve the vegetarian sate ayam with warm peanut sauce on the side, and enjoy!
