Ingredients

  • 4 pieces Portabella mushroom caps
  • 3 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons Balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Soy sauce
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon Freshly ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 4 pieces Burger buns
  • 4 pieces Lettuce leaves
  • 1 large, sliced Tomato
  • 1 small, thinly sliced Red onion
  • 4 pieces Cheddar cheese slices (optional)
  • 0 to taste Condiments (e.g., mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup)

Directions

Step 1

Clean the portabella mushroom caps by gently wiping them with a damp paper towel to remove any dirt. Remove the stems and scrape out the gills with a spoon if desired.

Step 2

In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, minced garlic, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt to create the marinade.

Step 3

Place the mushroom caps in a shallow dish or a resealable plastic bag. Pour the marinade over the mushrooms, ensuring they are fully coated. Let them marinate for at least 15 minutes, flipping them halfway through.

Step 4

Preheat a grill, grill pan, or skillet over medium heat. If using the grill or grill pan, lightly oil the grates to prevent sticking.

Step 5

Place the marinated mushroom caps on the grill or skillet, gill side down first. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until tender and slightly caramelized. If using cheese, place a slice of cheddar on each mushroom cap during the last minute of cooking to let it melt.

Step 6

Meanwhile, slice and lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster for a golden, crisp texture.

Step 7

Assemble the burgers by spreading condiments of your choice on the bottom half of each bun. Layer with a lettuce leaf, a cooked portabella mushroom cap, tomato slices, red onion slices, and any additional toppings you prefer.

Step 8

Top with the upper half of the bun and serve immediately. Enjoy with a side of fries, a salad, or your favorite accompaniments!
