Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.75 cup cold water
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 cups cooked green lentils
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic cloves
  • 1 medium scotch bonnet pepper
  • 1 teaspoon thyme leaves
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 0.5 cup bread crumbs
  • 0.5 cup vegetable stock
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 stalks green onions

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, turmeric, curry powder, and salt. Mix well.

Step 2

Cut the cold butter into small cubes and add to the flour mixture.

Step 3

Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

Step 4

Gradually add cold water, mixing continuously until a dough forms. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes.

Step 5

For the filling, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 6

Add chopped onion, minced garlic, and finely diced scotch bonnet pepper. Sauté until onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 7

Add cooked lentils to the skillet, followed by thyme, allspice, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

Step 8

Pour in the soy sauce and vegetable stock, then add bread crumbs. Stir until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 9

Remove from heat and stir in chopped green onions. Let cool slightly.

Step 10

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 11

Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.

Step 12

Cut dough into circles using a 5-6 inch cookie cutter or bowl as a guide.

Step 13

Place about 2 tablespoons of lentil filling onto one half of each dough circle.

Step 14

Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape, then crimp the edges with a fork to seal.

Step 15

Transfer patties to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 16

Let the patties cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your Vegetarian Jamaican Beef Patties with your favorite dipping sauce!
