Ingredients

  • 30 wonton wrappers
  • 200 grams firm tofu
  • 100 grams shiitake mushrooms
  • 1 medium carrot
  • 3 scallions
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 500 milliliters vegetable oil
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Prepare the filling: Press the tofu to remove excess water. Crumble it in a large bowl.

Step 2

Finely chop the shiitake mushrooms, peel and grate the carrot, and thinly slice the scallions. Add these vegetables to the bowl with the tofu.

Step 3

Grate the ginger and add it to the mixture along with the soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything well until combined.

Step 4

Prepare the wontons: Combine the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. This will be used to seal the wonton wrappers.

Step 5

Place a wonton wrapper on a flat surface. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center of the wrapper.

Step 6

Use your fingers or a pastry brush to moisten the edges of the wrapper with the cornstarch slurry.

Step 7

Fold the wrapper in half diagonally to form a triangle, pressing the edges firmly to seal, ensuring no air is trapped inside.

Step 8

Bring the two opposite corners of the triangle together and press to seal, forming the classic wonton shape. Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling.

Step 9

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or wok over medium-high heat.

Step 10

Once the oil is hot (around 350°F or 175°C), carefully add a few wontons at a time into the oil.

Step 11

Fry for about 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking.

Step 12

Remove the wontons from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Step 13

Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
