Ingredients

  • 14 ounces extra-firm tofu
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons green onions, thinly sliced

Directions

Step 1

Press the tofu to remove excess moisture: Wrap the tofu block with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and place a heavy object like a skillet on top for 15-20 minutes.

Step 2

While the tofu drains, in a large bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.

Step 3

Cut the pressed tofu into strips or bite-sized pieces. Place them in the buttermilk mixture to marinate for at least 15 minutes.

Step 4

In another bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, remaining salt, and pepper. Mix well.

Step 5

Heat the vegetable oil in a large, deep skillet or pan over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Step 6

Remove the tofu pieces from the buttermilk marinade, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge them in the flour mixture to coat evenly.

Step 7

Fry the tofu pieces in batches, careful not to overcrowd the pan, until they are golden brown and crispy, about 4 to 5 minutes per batch. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Step 8

To make the sauce, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Step 9

Stir in the honey and soy sauce and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 2 more minutes, then remove from heat.

Step 10

Arrange the fried tofu on a serving platter and drizzle the honey garlic sauce over them.

Step 11

Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions before serving. Enjoy immediately.
