Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium, finely chopped yellow onion
  • 1 medium, finely chopped green bell pepper
  • 3 cloves, minced garlic
  • 1 cup, dried red lentils
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon cumin
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 6 burger buns

Directions

Step 1

Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until the onion becomes translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 4

Rinse the red lentils under running water and add them to the pan.

Step 5

Pour in the vegetable broth, bringing the mixture to a gentle boil.

Step 6

Once boiling, reduce heat to low and let it simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the lentils are tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed.

Step 7

Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, black pepper, and salt.

Step 8

Continue to cook and stir for 5 more minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

Step 9

Toast the burger buns if desired.

Step 10

Spoon a generous portion of the lentil mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, cover with the top half, and serve immediately.
