Ingredients

  • 2 cans (20 oz each) Canned young jackfruit
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Liquid smoke
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 6 pieces Hamburger buns, toasted

Directions

Step 1

Drain and rinse the canned young jackfruit thoroughly in a colander under cold running water. Shake off excess water.

Step 2

Use your hands or a fork to shred the jackfruit into small, pulled pieces, discarding any tough core parts and seeds.

Step 3

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until the onion becomes translucent.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for another 1-2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant.

Step 5

Stir in the shredded jackfruit, smoked paprika, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the jackfruit to absorb the spices.

Step 6

Add the BBQ sauce and liquid smoke to the skillet. Stir until the jackfruit is fully coated with the sauce.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet. Let the jackfruit simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and the jackfruit to become tender.

Step 8

Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If you prefer a smokier flavor, you can add a small additional drop of liquid smoke.

Step 9

Once the jackfruit is done cooking and has a tender, pulled 'pork' texture, remove from heat and let it rest for a few minutes.

Step 10

Serve the jackfruit BBQ on toasted hamburger buns and enjoy your vegetarian classic pork BBQ!
