Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 oz) Black beans
  • 0.5 cup cooked Brown rice
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium, grated Carrot
  • 0.5 medium, diced Red onion
  • 2 cloves, minced Garlic
  • 2 tablespoons Soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 4 whole Hamburger buns
  • 4 Lettuce leaves
  • 1 large, sliced Tomato
  • 8 slices Pickles
  • 4 optional Cheese slices
  • 0.25 cup, for serving Ketchup
  • 0.25 cup, for serving Mustard

Directions

Step 1

Drain and rinse the black beans thoroughly. Mash them with a fork or potato masher in a large bowl until mostly smooth with some chunks remaining.

Step 2

Add the cooked brown rice, breadcrumbs, grated carrot, diced red onion, minced garlic, soy sauce, smoked paprika, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper to the mashed beans.

Step 3

Mix the ingredients thoroughly with your hands until the mixture is well combined.

Step 4

Crack the egg into the mixture and combine until everything sticks together and can be easily formed into patties.

Step 5

Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, approximately 1/2 inch thick.

Step 6

Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Brush the grill grates or pan lightly with olive oil to prevent sticking.

Step 7

Place the patties on the grill and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are nicely charred and heated through. If using cheese, place a slice over each patty in the last minute of cooking and cover to melt.

Step 8

Toast the hamburger buns on the grill for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

Step 9

Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by the grilled patty. Top with tomato slices, pickles, and the optional cheese if not already melted.

Step 10

Spread ketchup and mustard on the top half of the bun and close the burgers.

Step 11

Serve immediately with your favorite side dishes.
