Rinse the black beans in a colander and pat them dry with paper towels.
In a large bowl, mash the black beans using a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth with some texture remaining.
Finely chop the red onion and garlic cloves.
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until they are soft and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
Add the sautéed onions and garlic to the mashed black beans along with breadcrumbs, an egg, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
Mix all ingredients thoroughly until combined. Divide the mixture into 4 equal parts and shape each into a patty.
