Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups Vegan powdered milk (soy milk powder or coconut milk powder)
  • 0.25 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 teaspoons Baking soda
  • 0.5 cups Cashew yogurt (unsweetened)
  • 2 tablespoons Neutral oil or vegan butter, melted
  • 0.25 teaspoons Cardamom powder
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 2.5 cups Water
  • 1 teaspoons Rose water (optional)
  • 2 cups Vegan frying oil (such as sunflower or canola oil)
  • 2 tablespoons Chopped pistachios or almonds for garnish (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the vegan powdered milk, all-purpose flour, and baking soda.

Step 2

Add the cashew yogurt and melted vegan butter gradually to the dry mixture. Gently mix to form a soft, pliable dough. Be careful not to overmix as it can make the jamuns dense.

Step 3

Lightly grease your hands and divide the dough into small, smooth balls, about 1-inch in diameter. Make sure there are no cracks to keep them from breaking during frying.

Step 4

In a medium-sized pot, heat the frying oil over medium heat. Test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough into it; it should rise slowly to the surface.

Step 5

Fry the dough balls in small batches, stirring gently, until they are golden brown and evenly cooked. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.

Step 6

In a separate medium saucepan, combine sugar and water over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely to create a simple syrup.

Step 7

Add cardamom powder and rose water (if using) to the syrup. Let it simmer for 5 minutes, then turn off the heat.

Step 8

Once the fried dough balls are warm (not hot), gently place them in the warm sugar syrup. Let them soak for at least 2 hours, ensuring they absorb the syrup and become soft and juicy.

Step 9

Serve warm or at room temperature, garnished with chopped pistachios or almonds if desired.
