Ingredients

  • 30 pieces dumpling wrappers (vegan, round)
  • 200 grams shiitake mushrooms
  • 250 grams firm tofu
  • 1 medium carrot
  • 3 stalks scallions
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1.5 tablespoons ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tablespoon vegan hoisin sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

Directions

Step 1

First, prepare the filling by finely chopping the shiitake mushrooms, carrot, and scallions. Mince the garlic and grate the ginger.

Step 2

Drain and crumble the firm tofu into small pieces, mimicking the texture of ground meat.

Step 3

In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped mushrooms, carrot, crumbled tofu, scallions, garlic, and ginger.

Step 4

Add soy sauce, sesame oil, hoisin sauce, cornstarch, salt, and pepper to the bowl. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.

Step 5

Place a dumpling wrapper on a flat surface and add about a tablespoon of the filling to the center of the wrapper.

Step 6

Gently pleat the edges of the wrapper upwards, leaving the top of the filling exposed, and press firmly to form a cup shape.

Step 7

Repeat the wrapping process with the remaining filling and wrappers.

Step 8

Set up a bamboo or metal steamer over a pot of boiling water. Line the steamer basket with parchment paper or cabbage leaves to prevent sticking.

Step 9

Place dumplings in the steamer, making sure they do not touch each other.

Step 10

Cover and steam the dumplings for about 12-15 minutes, or until the wrappers become translucent and the filling is cooked through.

Step 11

Once steamed, remove dumplings from the steamer and let cool for a minute.

Step 12

Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds before serving. Serve hot with additional soy sauce or a dipping sauce of choice.
