Ingredients

  • 2 cups Chickpeas (cooked or canned)
  • 0.5 cup Split Bengal gram (chana dal)
  • 1 large Onion
  • 3 pieces Garlic cloves
  • 1 inch piece Ginger
  • 2 pieces Green chilies
  • 0.5 cup Fresh coriander leaves
  • 0.25 cup Mint leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon Garam masala
  • 0.5 teaspoon Red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 0.5 cup Bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons Oil

Directions

Step 1

Begin by soaking the split Bengal gram (chana dal) in water for at least an hour. Once soaked, drain and set aside.

Step 2

In a food processor, add the chickpeas, soaked chana dal, chopped onion, garlic cloves, ginger, and green chilies. Pulse until you achieve a coarse mixture.

Step 3

Add chopped fresh coriander leaves, mint leaves, ground cumin, ground coriander, garam masala, red chili powder, salt, and lemon juice to the mixture. Process again until well combined.

Step 4

Transfer the mixture into a bowl and stir in the bread crumbs until the mixture holds together.

Step 5

Shape the mixture into small, flat kebab patties. You should be able to make around 12-15 patties depending on size.

Step 6

Heat oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place the kebabs in the skillet and shallow fry them until golden brown and crispy on each side, about 3-4 minutes per side.

Step 7

Once cooked, remove from the skillet and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Step 8

Serve the Vegan Shami Kebabs hot, with your favorite chutney or dipping sauce.
