Ingredients

  • 400 grams firm tofu
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon coconut sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 200 milliliters coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 10 pieces wooden skewers

Directions

Step 1

Press the tofu to remove excess water. Wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel, place it on a plate, and set a heavy object on top for about 15 minutes.

Step 2

Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, prepare the marinade by combining soy sauce, coconut sugar, ground coriander, ground turmeric, garlic powder, cumin powder, and ground white pepper.

Step 4

Add the tofu cubes to the marinade, gently tossing to ensure all pieces are coated. Marinate for at least 30 minutes, or for more intense flavor, leave it for up to 2 hours in the refrigerator.

Step 5

Meanwhile, prepare the peanut sauce. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine peanut butter, coconut milk, lime juice, chili powder, and salt. Stir continuously until smooth and heated through. Adjust seasoning to taste, then set aside.

Step 6

Preheat the grill or a grill pan over medium-high heat. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 10 minutes to prevent burning.

Step 7

Thread the marinated tofu cubes onto the skewers, about 4-5 cubes per skewer.

Step 8

Brush the grill or grill pan with vegetable oil to prevent sticking. Grill the tofu skewers for about 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and have grill marks.

Step 9

Serve the vegan sate ayam hot, drizzled with the prepared peanut sauce or served on the side.
