Ingredients

  • 400 grams Seitan (store-bought or homemade)
  • 3 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons Tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 large Yellow onions
  • 1 tablespoon Brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh thyme (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Slice the seitan into 1-inch thick steaks or purchase pre-sliced seitan pieces.

Step 2

In a mixing bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil, tamari, balsamic vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Stir well to make a marinade.

Step 3

Place the seitan steaks in the marinade, ensuring each piece is well coated. Cover and let marinate for at least 15 minutes, or up to 1 hour for deeper flavor.

Step 4

While the seitan is marinating, peel the onions and slice them into thin rings.

Step 5

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil.

Step 6

Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes or until they start to soften.

Step 7

Add the brown sugar and salt to the onions, and continue cooking for another 10-15 minutes until they are caramelized and golden brown. Stir in fresh thyme if using. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 8

Preheat a grill pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the marinated seitan steaks. Grill each side for 5 minutes or until nicely charred and heated through.

Step 9

Serve the grilled seitan steaks topped with the caramelized onions.

Step 10

Pair your vegan grilled steak with your choice of side, such as mashed potatoes or a fresh green salad, and enjoy!
