Ingredients

  • 450 grams seitan (wheat gluten)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 250 milliliters BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 6 pieces hamburger buns
  • 6 slices pickles
  • 0.5 sliced red onion

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your grill or a grill pan to medium-high heat.

Step 2

Slice the seitan into thin strips resembling beef slices.

Step 3

In a medium bowl, whisk together olive oil, onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, ground black pepper, and salt.

Step 4

Add the sliced seitan to the bowl and toss to coat evenly with the seasoning mixture.

Step 5

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and liquid smoke. Stir occasionally until heated through, then remove from heat.

Step 6

Place the seasoned seitan strips on the grill and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they achieve grill marks and are heated through.

Step 7

Brush the seitan with the prepared BBQ sauce during the last minute of cooking on each side, allowing the sauce to caramelize slightly.

Step 8

Remove the seitan from the grill and toss the grilled seitan in the remaining BBQ sauce to coat completely.

Step 9

Toast the hamburger buns lightly on the grill or in a toaster.

Step 10

Assemble the BBQ sandwiches by placing coated seitan on the bottom bun, adding a slice of pickle and a few slices of red onion on top.

Step 11

Complete the sandwich with the top bun and serve immediately.
