Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks), softened Unsalted butter
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoons Almond extract
  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 2 cups (for icing) Powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons (for icing) Milk
  • 0.5 teaspoons (for icing) Vanilla extract
  • 0 (as needed, optional) Food coloring
  • 0 (optional) Sprinkles or edible decorations

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

Step 2

Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract to the bowl and mix until well combined.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 4

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.

Step 5

Divide the dough in half, flatten each portion into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Step 6

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 7

On a lightly floured surface, roll out one dough disc to about 1/4-inch thickness. Keep the other disc in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Step 8

Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies, gently transferring them to the prepared baking sheets about 1 inch apart.

Step 9

Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are barely golden. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 10

While the cookies are cooling, prepare the icing by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Add food coloring if desired, then divide the icing into separate bowls for multiple colors.

Step 11

Once the cookies have completely cooled, use a spoon, piping bag, or offset spatula to decorate them with the icing. Add sprinkles or edible decorations while the icing is still wet.

Step 12

Allow the decorated cookies to set for at least 30 minutes before serving or storing them in an airtight container.
