Ingredients

  • 1 cup Basmati rice
  • 1.5 cups Water
  • 0.5 teaspoons Turmeric powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons Ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon Unsalted butter (or ghee)
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 2-inch piece Cinnamon stick
  • 3 pieces Whole cloves
  • 2 pods Cardamom pods
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh cilantro (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the basmati rice under cold running water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Drain well and set aside.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter (or ghee) over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, and whole cloves to the melted butter, and sauté for about 1 minute until aromatic.

Step 4

Add the drained rice to the saucepan and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring gently to coat the grains in the butter and spices.

Step 5

Stir in the turmeric powder, ground cumin, and salt, ensuring the rice is evenly coated.

Step 6

Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 7

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.

Step 8

After 15 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes to absorb any remaining moisture.

Step 9

Fluff the rice gently with a fork, discard the cinnamon stick and cardamom pods, and transfer to a serving dish.

Step 10

Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro, if desired, and serve warm with your favorite curry or as a standalone dish.
