Ingredients

  • 1.5 kg potatoes
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 400 g canned tuna
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs

Directions

Step 1

Peel and chop the potatoes into roughly equal-sized pieces. Place them in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook for 15–20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender.

Step 2

While the potatoes are boiling, preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with a little olive oil.

Step 3

Finely dice the onion and mince the garlic. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and sauté the onion until soft, about 3–4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.

Step 4

Stir the drained tuna, frozen peas, and dried thyme into the skillet. Mix well and set aside.

Step 5

Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter, milk, salt, and black pepper, then mash until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning, if needed.

Step 6

Spread half of the mashed potatoes evenly into the prepared baking dish. Layer the tuna mixture over the mashed potatoes and sprinkle 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese on top.

Step 7

Spread the remaining mashed potatoes over the tuna and cheese layer. Smooth the surface and top with the remaining grated cheddar cheese and breadcrumbs.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the dish is heated through.

Step 9

Let the Tuna Potato Bake cool for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
