Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound ground pork
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 units garlic cloves, minced
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground thyme
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 unit bay leaf
  • 0 grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef and ground pork to the pot. Cook, breaking the meat into small crumbles, until browned and fully cooked through. Drain any excess fat, if needed.

Step 3

Add the finely chopped onion to the pot and sauté for 3-4 minutes, or until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Push the meat and onion mixture to one side of the pot, and add the tomato paste to the empty space. Let the tomato paste cook for 1 minute to deepen its flavor, stirring occasionally.

Step 5

Mix the tomato paste into the meat mixture, then add the crushed tomatoes and water. Stir to combine.

Step 6

Add the sugar, salt, dried basil, dried oregano, black pepper, ground thyme, ground allspice, and bay leaf to the pot. Stir well.

Step 7

Bring the sauce to a low simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer gently for 1 hour, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 8

Remove the bay leaf before serving. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed.

Step 9

Serve the sauce over your favorite cooked pasta, and garnish with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
