Ingredients

  • 500 grams Ground pork
  • 300 grams Potatoes
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 500 grams All-purpose flour
  • 250 grams Butter
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 120 milliliters Cold water
  • 2 tablespoons Milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1

Peel and dice the potatoes into small cubes. Boil them in salted water until slightly tender but not fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Step 2

Finely chop the onion. Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat and sauté the onion until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the ground pork to the pan and cook until browned. Season the mixture with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper.

Step 3

Add the partially cooked potatoes to the pork mixture. Stir well to combine and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. Remove the mixture from heat and let it cool completely.

Step 4

To prepare the pastry, mix the flour and remaining 1 teaspoon of salt in a large bowl. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

Step 5

Slowly add the cold water to the flour mixture, mixing with a fork until it forms a dough. Knead lightly until smooth, wrap in cling film, and refrigerate for 20 minutes.

Step 6

Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 7

After chilling, roll the pastry out on a floured surface to about 4-5mm thick. Use a large circular cutter or a bowl to cut out circles, approximately 15cm in diameter.

Step 8

Place 2-3 tablespoons of the cooled filling onto one half of each pastry circle, leaving a small border around the edge. Brush the edges of the pastry with a little milk.

Step 9

Fold the other half of the pastry over the filling to create a semi-circle. Press the edges firmly with your fingers or a fork to seal them.

Step 10

Beat the egg and brush it over the top of each pasty for a golden finish.

Step 11

Place the pasties on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and let the pasties cool slightly before serving. Enjoy on their own or with mushy peas, ketchup, or brown sauce.
