Ingredients

  • 300 g Wholemeal flour
  • 200 g All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Baking soda
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 400 ml Buttermilk

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the wholemeal flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix well to distribute the baking soda evenly.

Step 3

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.

Step 4

Using your hands or a wooden spoon, gently mix the ingredients until they come together to form a dough. Avoid over-mixing to keep the bread tender.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round disk about 2 inches (5 cm) thick.

Step 6

Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet and use a sharp knife to cut a deep cross into the top of the dough. This allows the bread to expand as it bakes.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 8

Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Step 9

Serve warm or at room temperature with butter or your favorite spreads. Enjoy!
