Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 0.75 cups buttermilk, cold
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional, for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well combined.

Step 3

Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Be careful not to overwork—the butter should stay cold.

Step 4

Make a well in the center of the dry mixture and pour in the cold buttermilk. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to gently mix until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat and fold the dough over itself 4–5 times to create layers. Flatten the dough to about 1-inch thickness.

Step 6

Use a round biscuit cutter (or the rim of a glass) to cut out biscuits, pressing straight down without twisting. Gather remaining dough scraps and repeat until all the dough is used.

Step 7

Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are touching slightly for softer sides or spaced apart for crispy edges.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and, if desired, brush the tops with melted butter for extra flavor and shine.

Step 10

Serve warm and enjoy tipping them with your favorite toppings or spreads!
