Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 pieces burger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese slices
  • 4 pieces lettuce leaves
  • 1 large tomato
  • 1 small red onion
  • 0.25 cup mayonnaise
  • 0.25 cup ketchup
  • 8 slices pickle slices
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or unsalted butter

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 2

Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty. Make the patties slightly larger than the buns to account for shrinkage during cooking. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to help them cook evenly.

Step 3

Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates if using a grill, or add a small amount of olive oil or butter to the skillet.

Step 4

Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on the first side, then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes on the second side for medium doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty to melt.

Step 5

While the patties cook, slice the tomato and red onion into thin rings, and prepare the lettuce leaves, rinsing and patting them dry as needed.

Step 6

Brush the insides of the burger buns with olive oil or butter, then toast them lightly on the grill or skillet until golden brown, about 1 minute.

Step 7

Assemble the burgers: Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise and ketchup on the bottom half of each bun. Add lettuce, a cooked patty with melted cheese, a slice of tomato, a few rings of red onion, and 2 pickle slices. Top with the other half of the bun.

Step 8

Serve immediately with your favorite summer sides like coleslaw, potato chips, or corn on the cob.
