Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 12 ounces Green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces or canned
  • 3 cups Mashed potatoes (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 cup Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 0.5 cup Milk (if making mashed potatoes from scratch)
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish with a bit of olive oil or butter to prevent sticking.

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and sauté the diced onion for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Step 3

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 7-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.

Step 4

Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to evenly flavor the beef mixture. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 5

If using fresh green beans, bring a pot of water to a boil and blanch the green beans for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain and rinse under cold water to stop the cooking process. If using canned green beans, drain and rinse them under cold water. Set aside.

Step 6

Prepare the mashed potatoes if making from scratch: Boil peeled and cubed potatoes in salted water for 12-15 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and mash with butter, milk, and salt to taste until smooth and creamy. Alternatively, use pre-made mashed potatoes to save time.

Step 7

Assemble the casserole: Spread the cooked ground beef mixture evenly into the bottom of the greased casserole dish. Layer the green beans on top of the beef. Finally, spread the mashed potatoes over the green beans, smoothing the top with a spatula.

Step 8

Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the mashed potatoes.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling. Optionally, broil for an additional 2-3 minutes to brown the cheese slightly.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and enjoy!
