Ingredients

  • 1 box Red velvet cake mix
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup Vegetable oil
  • 3 pieces Large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Pure vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces Cream cheese (softened)
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cups Powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Milk
  • 1 prepared tub Cream cheese frosting (optional for decoration)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and lightly flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, flour, sugar, and cocoa powder. Whisk to combine.

Step 3

Add the buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Using an electric mixer on low speed, mix for 30 seconds until just combined. Then increase the speed to medium and mix for 2 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Step 4

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.

Step 5

Bake the cakes in the preheated oven for 28-32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 6

Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 7

While the cakes are cooling, prepare the cream cheese frosting. In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 8

Gradually add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, mixing on low speed. Once all the sugar is incorporated, add the milk and mix until the frosting is fluffy and spreadable.

Step 9

Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous amount of frosting on top. Place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake with the remaining frosting.

Step 10

Optionally, pipe decorations using a prepared cream cheese frosting or garnish with sprinkles for added flair. Serve and enjoy your luscious red velvet cake!
