Ingredients

  • 500 grams beef (flank steak or sirloin), thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fish sauce
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 red Thai chiles, thinly sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper (red or green), thinly sliced
  • 1 cup holy basil leaves (or sweet basil)
  • 4 servings steamed jasmine rice, for serving

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and brown sugar. Set aside.

Step 2

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic and sliced chiles, and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 4

Increase the heat to high and add the sliced beef. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes, or until the beef is browned and cooked through.

Step 5

Add the sliced onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Stir-fry for another 2–3 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender-crisp.

Step 6

Pour the prepared sauce into the skillet, stirring well to coat the beef and vegetables evenly. Cook for 1–2 minutes to let the flavors meld.

Step 7

Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the holy basil leaves until wilted.

Step 8

Serve the Thai beef stir-fry hot over steamed jasmine rice.
