Ingredients

  • 500 grams Ground beef
  • 250 grams Ground pork
  • 50 grams Breadcrumbs
  • 100 ml Milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 small Onion
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Ground allspice
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 200 ml Sour cream
  • 200 ml Beef stock
  • 1 teaspoon Cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon Water
  • 4 tablespoons Lingonberry jam
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh dill (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let the mixture soak for 5 minutes until softened.

Step 2

Finely chop the onion and sauté it in 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Allow it to cool slightly.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, soaked breadcrumbs, egg, sautéed onion, salt, ground allspice, and black pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.

Step 4

Using your hands, shape the mixture into small meatballs, about the size of a walnut. This recipe should make around 20-24 meatballs.

Step 5

Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter and the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the meatballs in batches, turning them occasionally, until they are golden brown and cooked through, about 7-8 minutes per batch. Transfer cooked meatballs to a plate and keep warm.

Step 6

Reduce the heat to low and deglaze the skillet with beef stock, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

Step 7

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water to create a slurry. Stir it into the skillet and let the sauce thicken slightly.

Step 8

Once the sauce begins to thicken, stir in the sour cream and a pinch of additional allspice if desired. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper, then return the meatballs to the skillet. Simmer for 5 minutes to meld the flavors.

Step 9

Serve the meatballs hot with a generous dollop of lingonberry jam and optionally garnish with fresh dill. Pair with boiled potatoes or mashed potatoes for a traditional Finnish meal.
