Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup Soy sauce
  • 0.25 cup Brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 2 tablespoons Rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons Cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons Water
  • 1 teaspoon Optional: Sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon Optional: Green onions, thinly sliced

Directions

Step 1

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, grated ginger, and minced garlic. Whisk until the sugar is dissolved and the ingredients are well combined.

Step 2

In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with water to create a slurry. Stir until no lumps remain.

Step 3

Pour the cornstarch slurry into the marinade mixture and whisk to combine. This will help thicken the sauce slightly during cooking.

Step 4

Transfer the marinade to a saucepan and place it over medium heat. Simmer for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the marinade thickens to your desired consistency. Remove from heat and allow it to cool completely.

Step 5

Once cooled, use the marinade to coat chicken or beef. Place the meat in a plastic zip-top bag or a shallow dish, and pour the marinade over it. Seal the bag (or cover the dish) and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, preferably 2–8 hours for maximum flavor. Turn the meat occasionally to ensure even coverage.

Step 6

Before cooking the meat, remove it from the marinade and pat it dry with paper towels. Discard any leftover marinade or simmer it again to use as a glaze, ensuring it reaches a boil for food safety.

Step 7

Cook the marinated chicken or beef as desired (grill, bake, or stir-fry) and garnish with optional sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving. Enjoy!
