Ingredients

  • 8 pieces firm tofu
  • 1 medium carrot
  • 100 grams cabbage
  • 50 grams bean sprouts
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 whole shallots
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon white pepper
  • 100 grams all-purpose flour
  • 50 grams rice flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 150 ml water
  • 500 ml cooking oil

Directions

Step 1

Cut the firm tofu pieces into half diagonally to form triangles, then carefully hollow out a small pocket inside each piece to create space for the filling.

Step 2

Finely grate the carrot and thinly slice the cabbage. Set aside.

Step 3

Peel and finely chop the garlic and shallots.

Step 4

Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a wok or frying pan over medium heat. Add the garlic and shallots, and sauté until fragrant and translucent.

Step 5

Add the grated carrot, sliced cabbage, and bean sprouts to the pan, stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are slightly softened.

Step 6

Season the vegetable mixture with salt and white pepper, stir well, and remove from heat. Allow to cool slightly.

Step 7

Fill each tofu piece with the vegetable mixture using a spoon, pressing the filling gently to ensure it stays in place.

Step 8

In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, rice flour, turmeric powder, and a pinch of salt. Gradually add water while stirring to make a smooth batter.

Step 9

Dip each stuffed tofu piece into the batter, ensuring it’s evenly coated.

Step 10

Heat the remaining cooking oil in a deep pot or fryer over medium-high heat.

Step 11

Carefully place the batter-coated tofu pieces into the hot oil, frying them in batches until they are golden brown and crispy, about 5-6 minutes.

Step 12

Remove the tofu from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Step 13

Serve the Tahu Isi hot as a delightful snack or appetizer.
