Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 1/2 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 whole Large egg
  • 1.5 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons Extra heavy cream (for brushing)
  • 2 tablespoons Coarse sugar (optional, for sprinkling)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

Add the cold, cubed butter into the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 4

In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, egg, and vanilla extract until fully combined.

Step 5

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir until a dough starts to form. Do not overmix.

Step 6

Fold in the chocolate chips until evenly distributed.

Step 7

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a circle about 1 inch thick and 8 inches in diameter.

Step 8

Using a sharp knife or a bench scraper, cut the dough into 8 equal wedges, like slicing a pizza.

Step 9

Transfer the scones to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Step 10

Brush the tops of the scones with the extra heavy cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the tops are set.

Step 12

Remove the scones from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve warm or at room temperature.
