Ingredients

  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 Yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 15 ounces Crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 6 tablespoons Water, cold
  • 3 cups Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 Egg, lightly beaten

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the sausage and cook until browned, breaking it into crumbles, about 6-8 minutes. Remove and set aside.

Step 3

In the same skillet, sauté the diced onion until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Step 4

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mix in the cooked sausage and remove from heat.

Step 5

To make the crust, combine the flour and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Using a pastry cutter, cut the cold butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 6

Gradually add the cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 15 minutes.

Step 7

Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface into a large circle about 12 inches in diameter. Place the dough into a 9-inch deep-dish pie pan, pressing it gently into the bottom and up the sides. Trim any excess dough.

Step 8

Layer 1 cup of Swiss cheese onto the bottom of the crust. Pour the sausage and tomato mixture over the cheese and spread it evenly.

Step 9

Top the filling with the remaining 2 cups of Swiss cheese and sprinkle the grated Parmesan on top.

Step 10

Brush the edges of the crust with the beaten egg for a golden finish.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and the crust is golden brown.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and let the dish cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
