Ingredients

  • 500 grams Sauerkraut
  • 1 medium Apple
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon White vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Caraway seeds
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 0.5 cup Water

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the sauerkraut under cold water to remove excess saltiness, and then drain well.

Step 2

Peel and chop the apple into small cubes. Dice the onion finely.

Step 3

In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Step 4

Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened and translucent.

Step 5

Add the diced apple to the skillet and cook for another 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

Stir in the sauerkraut, brown sugar, white vinegar, caraway seeds, salt, and ground black pepper.

Step 7

Pour in the water and stir everything together to combine.

Step 8

Lower the heat to medium-low, cover the skillet, and let the mixture simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a splash of water if needed to prevent sticking.

Step 9

Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more sugar for sweetness or vinegar for tanginess if desired.

Step 10

Serve warm as a side dish or topping for sausages, pork chops, or roasted vegetables.
